His exploration of the Seven Deadly Sins and the Four Cardinal Virtues unfolds through allegories, genre scenes, as well as portraits and self-portraits. Among these, personification plays a central role\u2014most notably in the titular piece of the exhibition, a depiction of the Florentine Dominican friar Girolamo <a href=\"https:\/\/polskieradio24.pl\/artykul\/3173915,savonarola-prorok-apokalipsy-wrog-grzechu-krytyk-papieza\">Savonarola<\/a>, embodying the sin of Wrath. A radical preacher of his time, Savonarola condemned all forms of sinfulness and prophesied the downfall of the world. In Cie\u015bniewski\u2019s vision, the monk\u2019s profile emerges from an abyss of darkness. This blackness becomes a chasm, a reflection of the fury, bitterness, and despair in which the enraged Savonarola is consumed.<\/p><h3>Language in Art<\/h3><p>The painterly language of Cie\u015bniewski\u2019s works acts as an additional narrator\u2014one that \u201cspeaks\u201d beyond the surface. Each piece in the series communicates through more than its chosen scene. The brushstrokes, the contrasts of light and color, and the textures themselves tell stories. A comparison can be drawn to another contemporary Polish painter, <a href=\"https:\/\/zacheta.art.pl\/pl\/kolekcja\/artysci\/stefan-gierowski\">Stefan Gierowski<\/a> (1925\u20132022), who in his <em>Painting of the Ten Commandments<\/em> series (1986\u20131987) used only abstract compositions of color, light, and texture to express the essence of the commandments. In contrast, Cie\u015bniewski embraces both narration and figuration, blending human stories with contemporary interpretations of virtues and vices.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-3b31464\" data-id=\"3b31464\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ab1eec2 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"ab1eec2\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h3>A Contemporary Reimagining of Classical Themes<\/h3><p>In Cie\u015bniewski\u2019s works, we do not find caricatured depictions of gluttonous figures gorging in taverns or socialites splurging on beauty rituals. Instead, he offers a contemporary reimagining of traditional themes with provocative reinterpretations. For instance, Pride, in his portrayal, is not a simple vanity but a rebellion rooted in fear. Cie\u015bniewski\u2019s depiction does not condemn its subject, as was often the case in classical representations, but evokes compassion. Pride is personified by a young woman named Emu, who gains courage and confidence by applying bold, unconventional makeup.<\/p><h3>Virtue and Vice Reversed: A Modern Look at Human Nature<\/h3><p>Courage, on the other hand, is not embodied by a heroic warrior ready for battle but by a lone woman with a child, shivering under a blanket for warmth. Or perhaps it is a man\u2014one unafraid to display love, tenderness, and vulnerability, presenting these traits as acts of bravery and defiance against societal expectations.<\/p><p>Classical depictions of virtues and sins were often moralistic and didactic, illustrating in clear terms what should or should not be done, sometimes with a touch of humor. Cie\u015bniewski\u2019s series, however, offers no such instructions. Instead, it is a modern dissection of human nature\u2014a panoramic view of human actions devoid of Christian doctrine. Here, vices and virtues occasionally trade places, challenging viewers to reconsider their roles and meanings in contemporary life.<\/p><h3><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.grazynabastek.pl\/\">Dr Gra\u017cyna Bastek<\/a> <\/strong><\/h3><p><em>is an esteemed art historian and writer, currently working at the National Museum in Warsaw. She also lectures at the Institute of Art History and the Postgraduate Museum Studies Program at the University of Warsaw, as well as at the Theatre Academy in Warsaw. Her expertise lies in the history of early modern European painting and the techniques of the Old Masters. <\/em><em>She is the author of several influential works, including \u201cVenetian Workshops in the Second Half of the 15th and 16th Century: Bellini, Giorgione, Titian, Tintoretto\u201d (2010), \u201cConversations of Images\u201d (Vol. 1-2, 2020), and \u201cIlustrownik: A Guide to Painting\u201d (2024). <\/em><em>Dr Bastek is deeply committed to making the history of art accessible to a wider audience. Her insightful essays on painting have been published in Newsweek Historia, Vogue Polska, Przekr\u00f3j Quarterly, Dwutygodnik.pl, and Spotkania z Zabytkami.
